The midfield group is headlined by two returning All-State selections who should continue their runs this season. Following the returners are high-level college prospects who, on any given day, could prove to be the best midfielders in the state. It will be a tight race to see who finds their way onto this season’s All-State list.

  • Emerson McGrath – St. Viator – High Point

High-Point bound Emerson McGrath is a threat from every spot on the field. His speed, decision-making, and shot make him a threat to put up major numbers every game. As St. Viator looks to finish their season on top, McGrath will need to be the focal point in major games leading up to the playoffs. If St. Viator has the season they are aiming for, McGrath will be a major focal point for the Lions and should put up major numbers.

  • Franco Caputo – St. Viator – Iona

One of the most explosive players in the state with a shot to match, Caputo is a matchup nightmare. Despite being a Division 1 commit, Franco has never actually started on the top line in his high school career. With that set to change this year, Caputo has the chance to instantly launch himself into the conversation for the state’s most impactful midfielder. As a major piece in a potentially explosive offense, look for Franco to make a major name for himself this season before heading to Iona in the fall.

  • Hans Huber – New Trier

Huber is perhaps the most unorthodox player on the list. He is tall, strong, and plays at a pace that is uniquely his own. His presence controls the pace of play and will provide a calming presence for New Trier in the midfield. New Trier has had a different midfielder step up every year and become a major presence in the state. Huber appears next in line in the long lineage of New Trier midfielders and should have a highly successful senior season.

  • Aydan Weiszhar – Barrington – Alabama-Huntsville

Another tall and strong midfielder who can shoot the ball from anywhere on the field. Weiszhar is a member of a tight core of Barrington seniors that make the Broncos a dangerous team to watch this year. If Barrington achieves its lofty expectations this season, which include not only continuing to dominate the MSL but also competing for the state title, Weiszhar will be a major factor in their success and should rack up the accolades at the end of the season.

  • Lucas Kroner – Lake Forest – Lafayette

Kroner is perhaps the most well-known and established midfielder on the list. Kroner is a heavy right-to-right dodger whom teams can scout, but can rarely stop. Kroner’s size and speed allow him to handle any matchup that gets sent his way, and he never shies away from the big moment. With a state championship under his belt, look for Kroner to have a massive senior season and finish his high school career with a litany of awards and postseason recognition, as well as possibly another ring.

Honrable Mention

Keaton Franzen (St. Viator), Evan Gaughan (York), Cooper Kinney(Glenbard West), Drew Schwitzenberg (Loyola), Marty Junkins (St. Ignatius),

Finn DeGroot has to be in the convo as an LSM? Has ~12+ goals for the Trevians—AND routinely draws some of the toughest defensive assignments…don’t sleep on the LSMs.
